Who I am

My name is Marc.  I am a photographer for the psychological benefits.  There is a zen-like moment of nothingness – where the world disappears and the only thing I’m thinking about is the shot I’m taking – that I love about photography.

I try to notice the things that are right in front of me – try to make the mundane remarkable.

When I’m not shooting photos, I’m a father to two awesome children who regularly remind me to be more fun.  I’m a husband to the coolest chick around who lets me indulge my stupid obsessions (like Star Wars and Batman) without judgment.  I’m a teacher of high school students, and recently learned that the world can be changed in fun ways by working with teenagers.

As of 9 July, 2o12, my family and I moved to Jakarta, Indonesia.  In an otherwise uncharacteristic move, we decided upon a life of adventure instead of the comfortable and safe life we’d been building for ourselves up to that point.  It is a most wonderful adventure, so far, and our daily life has been turned into an education in culture.  I can’t quite understand how we all decided this was a great idea, but the children are getting a great education, my wife and I get to work in the same school, and we have quite a lot of traveling around South Asia already in the works.

Quick note:  on February 28th, WordPress decided that I would be one of many Freshly Pressed sites that day.  I was inundated with views (3052 – whoo!) and comments from people who really wanted to let everyone know how they felt.  It was weird, in a nice way.  I commented back to as many people as I could and the comments keep flowing in even now (March 9).  I switched from another blogging service to WordPress last year and I have been more than pleased.  Thanks, WordPress.

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at the world through my eyes.  You’re very nice.

    • There are days when, if it weren’t for the benefits of photography, I might need therapy. I like to think of it as self-counseling.

      Thanks for stopping by.

Going to school for about 11 years now, and can easily say your the best teacher I’ve ever had. You and Mr. Neufeld just put a smile on every student’s face in class. Props to that, because usually that rarely occurs. 🙂

  12. Love your photos! And I think I was meant to stumble upon your blog because we have very similar header photographs (though my blog isn’t a photography one, I still have a photo I took as my header). Either our minds work similarly (in which case, I’m very happy not to be the only one!) or it’s the kind of photo that lends itself well for use as a header. Anyway, glad to have found this site!

    • Thanks very much.

I have come to realize that there is little that is truly mundane. The things we take for granted often have some intricate beauty that we miss because we see it everyday.

  16. I’m enjoying following your daily photoblog. A quick question – I’m interested to know what camera(s) you use?

    November 5, 2011 at 3:27 am

    • Thanks for the daily check-ins.

As for my equipment? I shoot with two different cameras: a Pentax K20D with battery grip and a 1976 Pentax K1000 (film, totally manual).

I started working with the K1000 about seven years ago and had started a nice little collection of K Mount lenses. When I switched to digital about four years ago, I made sure to buy a Pentax, as all of the heritage lenses work beautifully with the digital bodies. As for lenses, I have a Pentax M 28mm, f2.8; a Pentax M 50mm, f1.7; a Pentax A 50mm, f1.7 (“A” designates that I can set the aperture in my camera, rather than having to be completely manual); a Pentax DA ALII 18-55mm kit lens; a Tokina 28-70mm, f3.9; and a Tokina 70-210, f3.5. I don’t have an accessory flash. I had one, but found all my photos came out strangely unnatural. I try to use available light as much as possible.

I’ve been checking out your blog pretty regularly. What do you shoot with?

  21. I would love to follow you on Facebook (if you have a Facebook page where you post your photos, let me know)
Also, would love to pick your brain and find out where an appropriate graffiti place is to take some portraits (a place someone can stand in the circles possibly?) Could you recommend?

    February 14, 2012 at 10:44 am

    • I just post my photos to my FB wall through WordPress’ applications.

As for graffiti locales – I shoot most of mine in the railway underpass by Walmart in Abbotsford. It can be a bit dodgy there, but the graffiti is great and the architecture is all lines and circles. The circles are, in some cases, hard to get to because of their height, but I have some professional photographer friends who shot grad photos down there, so it must be workable.

I will think about starting a FB photography page. Thanks for stopping by.

I am interested in one of your pictures. Would you be willing to email reference this? Please say yes! 🙂

    November 8, 2012 at 12:08 am

    • Interested, as in what? You mean for your own display? Which one? I’m happy to share, but I’ve moved to Indonesia and may not have the full size file with me…it may be in Canada on an ehd…creating a small, but insurmountable, problem.

      November 8, 2012 at 12:13 am

      • Kristi

well…I have written a book. I would like to epublish it so it wouldn’t be a hardcopy. It is a young adult fiction book about a girl growing up in Ashland Oregon. They vacation to Cannon Beach over the summer vacation. The picture of your daughter in front of haystack rock is perfect! Her face isn’t shown so it simply gives an idea of what this girl looks like…. In order to epub you have to have a book cover. Curious as to your thoughts. I’d be willing to say cover done by….. Kristi
